MAINTAIN FUEL AND BATTERY LEVELS
Whether your golf cart is electric or traditional, it’s important to make sure that you’re always keeping it juiced. Golf carts are often used by company staff to carry out operational tasks, and they’re also commonly provided for guests depending on the industry. But in either case, a golf cart that suddenly dies is no-bueno. It severely inconveniences your guests, and it could even disrupt company processes.
With electric golf carts, we recommend plugging them in whenever they’re not in use. This makes things easier for everyone as they’ll always be ready to go at full power. For traditionally fueled carts, treat it like your car; once the fuel is down to a quarter tank, it’s time to fill up again. Ideally, though, you should have a refueling schedule for your fleet that prevents fuel from even getting that low.
DON’T SLACK ON REPLACING THE BRAKES
Much like a car, your golf cart brakes won’t just fail without warning; you’ll start seeing signs that it’s time to replace them. Of course, if these are ignored, it’s an accident waiting to happen. It’s extremely important to make sure that brakes are frequently replaced when their time has come, especially since golf carts spend most of their time driving in pedestrian-heavy areas.
Aside from being a danger to other people, bad brakes can be life-threatening for passengers. The most obvious example is an actual golf course, which are quite often full of hills and slopes; you don’t need us to tell you why it’d be dangerous if your brakes stopped working on that kind of terrain.
CHECK TIRE AIR PRESSURE MONTHLY
There are various problems that come from over- or under-inflated tires on cars, and the same principles apply with golf carts. If the air pressure is too high, it results in a bouncy and bumpy ride, and when the four wheels have different pressure levels, the uneven positioning causes wear-and-tear at an accelerated weight. Too low, and it damages the tire, creates excessive friction, and can lead to tread separation.
Luckily, maintaining proper air pressure is easy. All you need is a pressure gauge, which you can find for less than $10 at a gas station or any auto part store. Once you’ve got that, just stick it into the tire, and you’ll get an air pressure reading. From there, you simply inflate it or let out air until you’ve reached the desired PSI rating. You’re usually aiming for somewhere in the 18-22 range, but you should consult the owner’s manual and tires for the ideal number, because it varies from vehicle to vehicle.
KEEP IT CLEAN
While it’s easy to just roll into a car wash when you want to clean up your main ride, it should be pretty obvious why that strategy wouldn’t work with a golf cart. We haven’t ridden through a car wash in an open vehicle ourselves, but we don’t imagine it’d be too much fun being blasted by high-pressure soap jets.
So, to clean your golf carts, you’re going to have to take the initiative. Golf carts, unlike cars, often ride on a variety of different terrain, and it’s not uncommon for them to be exposed to the elements when they’re not in use. Many companies don’t have dedicated garages for their golf cart fleet, opting instead for carports or uncovered parking lots. Given that golf carts are open vehicles, the weather can take its toll on them.
Golf carts could be damp from storms and precipitation or splattered with mud from previous rides. This is not only unsightly, but it can also be uncomfortable for passengers. Keep your golf carts clean, you won’t regret it!
